Maine Campus named College Paper of the Year
The Maine Campus, the independent student newspaper at the University of Maine, was named the first-ever College Paper of the Year by the New England Society of Newspaper Editors at its Nov. 13 conference.
"NESNE should be commended for its commitment to college journalism," said William P. Davis, editor in chief of The Maine Campus. "It's important professional papers recognize college newspapers as the premiere training ground for their organizations. By establishing its College Paper of the Year award, NESNE is affirming this for all its members."
The Maine Campus and two runner-ups were presented with plaques at the NESNE conference in North Andover, Mass. The Equinox, of Keene State College (N.H.), and The Informer, of the University of Hartford (Conn.), were named as runner-ups.
The Maine Campus has served the University of Maine campus since 1875 and is one of the oldest continually operating newspapers in the state. It is published twice a week during the academic school year and can be read daily on mainecampus.com.
Other individual awards presented at the NESNE conference were:
Master photographer: Amelia Kunhardt, Patriot Ledger, Quincy, Mass.
Master reporter: Brian MacQuarrie, The Boston Globe
Community reporting award: Maureen Boyle, The Enterprise, Brockton, Mass.
Reporter of the year, non-daily: Kathy Cleveland, The Cabinet, Milford, N.H.
